Spring Series - Race 2025-05-25

Lauritz Chambers 25 May 2025 46

It was another amazing day for keelboat racing with 8 boats joining in. The south east winds were s bit stronger than expected at 10 to 15 knots. Our course ran upwind from Willingdon Beach to Grief Point then downwind to the virtual mark half way between Willingdon and the southern tip of Harwood Island before a final close reach back to Willingdon for the finish, a distance of 9 nautical miles.

The start was fast and a bit complicated as 3 of us, Seance, Una and Balderdash were in very close quarters with little room to maneuver. Captain Kyle sensing disaster tacked Seance around thus missing the start and we are all grateful. Una managed to lead to the Grief Point mark where again the same three boats met up at the same moment but we played by the rules and rounded without controversy to head off downwind to the mid channel mark.

No spinnakers were flown but the temptation was certainly there - the memory of a similar situation 2 weeks ago was fresh in our minds. Wing on wing seemed to be the best strategy as Bring Ice crept into contention from behind. After the mid mark Balderdash took the lead with Seance close behind. Bring Ice came abreast of Una before unfortuatly dropping her chute into the water allowing Una to pull ahead. Meanwhile Kukuna crept into contention and finished well.

Congradulations to Balderdash for crossing first and to Bring Ice for the win.
