Frostbite Series - Race 2025-03-16
Seven boats with hearty crews set sail today on our last of the Frostbites. Our course took us from Willingdon beach upwind to Grief Point, then downwind to the virtual mid channel mark before beating back to Willingdon beach, a distance of nine nautical miles or 18 km. South east winds of 10 - 12 knots prevailed giving us plenty of power to cover the course in 1 1/2 hours and the cold rain couldn't dampen our spirits as in the excitement it was hardly noticed.
Una got off to a good start and held the lead for most of the first leg until Revelar went barreling past. Approaching the Grief Point mark, our (Una’s) tiller-man found the mark and it seemed we could make it without a tack until our luck turned foul and the mark turned into a large goose. We were still 200 meters short but we did make the real mark without tacking. Revelar was in the lead while Red Dwarf was closing in on Una from behind but where was our nemesis, Bring Ice who has been trading victories with us all through the series. Apparently trouble began when an overlapped genoa sheet got so stuck that Bring Ice hove to right at the start mark resulting in penalty turns as she forced Solitude to bear away and miss the start entirely.
Seemingly this was a disaster for both boats however Bring Ice miraculously recovered to sail a brilliant race finishing first in corrected time. Congratulations as well to Revelar for line honours.
