Frostbite Series - Race 2025-02-01

Lauritz Chambers 1 February 2025 19

After suffering Saturday after Saturday of drifting about in light breezes it was the day we’ve been waiting for. A moderate 10 - 12 knot south easterly wind took us on a beat from the south harbour mark to Grief Point, then downwind to our mid-channel virtual mark before returning on a close reach to the south harbour to finish, a distance of approx. 7.5 nautical miles.

It was a fast race in all directions and it tested our brains, our muscles and our luck. Red Dwarf led at the start with Bring Ice and Solitude close behind but not necessarily in that order. Una and Navis were next followed by Seance however Seance owned the first leg as she effortlessly passed the rest of the fleet to turn the Grief Point mark in the lead. The second leg being downwind favoured the boats going wing on wing as the wind strength enabled them to come close to hull speed. Seance now led by a wide margin but as luck would have it her electronics failed and consequently skipper Brian had trouble finding the virtual mark, likely costing him the race.

Meanwhile Una caught up to Bring Ice on the second leg and managed to pass her on the final leg with Solitude in close pursuit. Luck again would intervene on that final leg as Bring Ice twice rounded up so sharply she crossed over head to wind thus having to come fully about, ruining her chance of a podium appearance.

Congratulations to Seance for line honours and to Una for a lucky win in corrected time and to Solitude whose efforts lately are causing serious concern.
