Frostbite Series - Race 2025-01-25

Lauritz Chambers 25 January 2025 23

It was a lovely day in every way except for sailing that is - unless you were one of the lucky who found enough wind to finish. The sky was clear and blue and the sun was hot. The sea was full of life with schools of dolphins racing about like horses while sea lions and dogs barked at them from shore. The calendar say’s spring is a ways off but these animals don’t know about calendars. They just feel.

Given the low wind conditions our course was from the Willingdon beach mark to the mill and back. Six hopefuls began the race but only three survived to finish. The start was slower than slow taking half an hour to reach the start mark. Bring Ice and Solitude took the lead followed by Red Dwarf, Una, Navis and Revelar. At the mill mark it was Bring Ice followed closely by Una, Red Dwarf and Solitude.

Una tried to tack around the mark with her spinnaker, lost speed, went into irons, tried again a couple of times before finally giving up to watch the dolphins. The wind had dropped to nothing and we were getting hungry. Conclusion : Don’t try to tack with a spinnaker. But you can jibe.

Congradulations to Bring Ice for a nice win on a difficult day in a very respectable time considering.
