Fall Series - Race 2025-11-15
We had a great turnout today with 8 boats filled with adventure seekers. The expected south-east wind was not from the south east at all but from the north west. Our course was a simple one given the light conditions.
Starting at Willingdon we drifted downwind to the Grief Point mark which we took to starboard. We then attempted to beat back to Willingdon for the finish. We took out times at Grief Point just in case we might not make it back the finish line. This turned out to be an excellent idea.
The start was a Spanish roundabout nightmare in slow motion; one of those scary, crazy events where everyone escapes miraculously unscathed without so much as a traffic ticket. Una managed to get in front by hugging the beach until the depth sounder screamed. Seance gave a good chase but couldn’t quite catch up and Balderdash couldn’t quite catch Seance. The rest slipped silently along with their colourful sails brightening up the day. The race could have been choreographed to some beautiful overture. We started off as slow as a sailboat can go and built our speed steadily upwards into a rousing climax all of 5 knots after which we gradually slowed to a complete stop a few hundred meters from the finish line.
Some races are like that but while they might sound somewhat boring there are so many lessons both taught and learned. Understanding the back eddies in relation to the shape of the shore and direction of the tidal current, or shaping the sails to get them working most efficiently. Helming or moving people around to find the best balance for speed etc. etc. So many lessons are given by the boat slowly passing you by or visa versa. Winning a trophy is a worthy goal but the knowledge learned is the real prize.
