Fall Series - Race 2025-11-08

It may have not been a Blue Jays vs Dodgers game but probably the next best thing. At least for the participants.

Eight finely tuned champions came to out maneuver, out fox and out sail each other in a valiant effort today. Our course took us from Willingdon beach upwind to Grief point, then downwind to virtual mark “C” before a close reach to finish at Willingdon, a distance of about 6 nautical miles.

Lining up for the start a refreshing easterly breeze filled our sails as the fleet approached the start line. Carefully gauging the time it would take to cover the distance remaining given the wind speed, the pack was in close agreement and approached cautiously. Then the wind dropped to nothing. Una, at the line a bit early, found herself luckily positioned to cross first without interference from the rest as they sat dead in the water behind her Only Kukuna threatened as she approached on starboard tack to unfortunately fall victim to the south moving tidal current that swept her south of the mark before she could round it. While Bring Ice found herself in a duel with Navis, Seance crept silently forward, finding enough wind with her tall sails to pass by the clutter and head offshore to find some serious wind should there be any to find.

On the first leg to Grief Point the wind constantly changed it’s mind and if the helmsman and trimmer weren’t able to keep up then they might as well go home. Seance found her offshore wind and made the most of it, rounding the Grief Point mark like a pro well in the lead and proceeded to raise her spinnaker and increase her lead to virtual mark “C”. Una came next having out-duelled Bring Ice through the inshore wind shifts and proceeded to increase her lead en route to “C”. The rest followed in orderly fashion. The close reach to Willingdon was quick and exciting. We would have been perhaps wiser to drop our spinnaker early but we made it home regardless.
