Fall Series - Race 2025-10-25

Lauritz Chambers 25 October 2025 73

The threatening gale force winds from the south-east blew themselves out before they reached us. Our challenge was sailing in the 3 - 10 knot unstable whorls and gusts. Our course was from Willingdon to Grief Point followed by a run to the Mill and finally a beat back to the finish at Willingdon.

Fall Series - Race 2025-10-11

Lauritz Chambers 11 October 2025 90

It was a challenging day with strong choppy North west winds at 10 - 20 knots. Six boats entered the race and everyone finished. Our course was a beat from Willingdon to the mill followed by a close reach to our virtual mid-channel mark and then downwind to Grief Point with a close reach to the finish at Willingdon, a distance of 10 nautical miles. It was a fast race as we covered the 10 nautical miles in less time than last weeks 6 mile course.

What can I say? It was a near perfect day with a happy ending. The north westerly winds blessed us with 5 to 10 knots of their finest.

Fall Series - Race 2025-09-27

Lauritz Chambers 27 September 2025 99

Six boats took part today in a 10 nautical mile race from Willingdon upwind to Grief Point, out to our mid channel mark, down to the mill mark and finally to the finish at Willingdon Beach.  Half way to the mid channel mark the wind changed direction from south east to north west. which would not be a big deal if you weren’t flying a spinnaker.

Lauritz Chambers 20 September 2025 99

The race today had predicted winds 20-30 knots from SE with some gusts closer to grief point at 30 knots. We have 8 new crew to go sailing today and though Una and Séance were not present we managed to find a boat for all of them!

Algerine Passage Race results 2025-05-18

Lauritz Chambers 18 May 2025 491

It was kind of expected given that since 1970, out of 49 races completed, the Powell River side has won the cup only 6 times. Last year both cups, the Algerine trophy for 1st place corrected as well as the Credit Union trophy for line honours were both captured by Powell River. In this race Comox was well prepared for revenge.

Spring Series - Race 2025-05-10

Lauritz Chambers 14 May 2025 633

The south east winds strengthened from the start from an estimated 8 knots up to 17 and it seemed we had some 20 knot gusts, one of which had the honour of shredding Una’s spinnaker.

Spring Series - Race 2025-04-26

Lauritz Chambers 26 April 2025 563

In every sailboat race there are lessons learned. Fickle weather knows no loyalties. One might have a brilliant start and build a significant lead and have a happy crew fully expecting to claim the podium only to have the wind vanish in the final moments to go and attend to someone else's flogging sails. Today’s lessons were about patience and humility.

Frostbite Series - Race 2025-03-16

Lauritz Chambers 16 March 2025 518

Our course took us from Willingdon beach upwind to Grief Point, then downwind to the virtual mid channel mark before beating back to Willingdon beach, a distance of nine nautical miles or 18 km. South east winds of 10 - 12 knots prevailed giving us plenty of power to cover the course in 1 1/2 hours and the cold rain couldn't dampen our spirits as in the excitement it was hardly noticed.

Frostbite Series - Race 2025-03-01

Lauritz Chambers 1 March 2025 455

Winds were predicted to come lightly from the south east. Instead they came from the opposite direction and rather than light they were actually quite pleasant pulling us along at over 4 knots for part of the way.

Frostbite Series - Race 2025-02-15

Lauritz Chambers 15 February 2025 804

First my apologies for the slightly pessimistic weather report Friday evening as it may have frightened some from coming out. Still we had enough fearless daredevils to crew up 4 boats for what turned out to be a pleasant race in moderate winds and with only a hint of rain.

Frostbite Series - Race 2025-02-01

Lauritz Chambers 1 February 2025 820

After suffering Saturday after Saturday of drifting about in light breezes it was the day we’ve been waiting for. A moderate 10 - 12 knot south easterly wind took us on a beat from the south harbour mark to Grief Point, then downwind to our mid-channel virtual mark before returning on a close reach to the south harbour to finish, a distance of approx. 7.5 nautical miles.

Frostbite Series - Race 2025-01-25

Lauritz Chambers 25 January 2025 859

It was a lovely day in every way except for sailing that is - unless you
were one of the lucky who found enough wind to finish. The sky was
clear and blue and the sun was hot. The sea was full of life with
schools of dolphins racing about like horses while sea lions and dogs
barked at them from shore.

Lauritz Chambers 18 January 2025 717

Those who failed to show today missed a special one. (Regrets Brian we hope you recover for next week) It was a light wind race for the most part with just enough medium strength wind thrown in to ensure we were in on time for lunch.

Frostbite Series - Race 2025-01-11

Lauritz Chambers 13 January 2025 1079

As predicted sunshine and a warm breeze made for a very enjoyable race. Winds were light at the start and coming from the south east near the shore while further out they were coming from the north-west.
